Pray.

Work hard.

Strive for excellence.

Be vigilant.

In three days’ time, two friends of mine have called. They don’t know each other. They’re not even in the same discipline or state. But BOTH of them have suddenly glimpsed opportunities, out of the clear blue, that might develop into the jobs of their dreams. They weren’t out hunting. They were just doing what they love, and doing it with excellence. They have suddenly stumbled onto doors that they’ve never seen before, and they’re knocking hard on those doors. The doors may open. No telling yet what’s going to happen. But things can change in an instant, when God’s good and ready to take you to the next level.

Or they may not. You may see that opportunity come and go. I received a call from someone interested in a project I was developing. That was more than five months ago. Everything seemed friendly and positive and exciting. And suddenly, silence. Nothing. Sometimes God just wants to let us know that when the time is right, he CAN do something. The fact that he doesn’t think NOW is the time may be due to all kinds of things. Perhaps we’re not ready for it. Perhaps he’s protecting us. Perhaps we are ready, but others are not, and so we wait for God’s will and the freewill of others to align. Who knows? The important thing is to be vigilant. Do our work with excellence. Press on, not for that glorious job or for praise or for achievement… but to serve, in humility, the way God quietly serves us every single moment of every single day.

My prayers and best wishes go out to my two friends, who I have promised to keep anonymous. If they get the chance to work in the jobs that their hearts’ desire, they will really be something to see. Whatever the outcome, I admire them both for the examples they set.
