As a British-born filmmaker swept up the red carpet in Hollywood’s swanky Kodak Theatre to receive an Oscar for best documentary film, half a world away in a dank and dingy room in Calcutta’s notorious red light district, a group of scrawny children excitedly watched the awards ceremony on television.

“We are so happy our Auntie Zana has won the award,” said Puja, 14, as film director Zana Briski walked up to receive the Oscar for “Born Into Brothels,” a portrayal of life on the streets for the children of prostitutes of Calcutta’s teeming Sonagachi district.
